Lazarus, Come Forth!
The students have gotten a little tired of cooking and just want to have cereal and fruit this morning. I think it is also because they can sleep in a little longer as well! We arrived at the church and 10 kids were already there. They came running up to meet us and excited to play with us. What a difference a few days makes! In general, the VBS kids were more talkative, willing to join in with the games and songs, etc. and our students did a good job engaging them. Thank you so much for your prayers regarding this!
Todays VBS , however, wasn’t as tightly run as the first two days. There were some mistakes made, transitions were awkward, some things weren’t thought through well enough, and the kids got confused on the craft. They still had a great time and enjoyed the experience. We debriefed the issues later that day, talked about where the problems had happened, and made corrections for our final day of VBS. I think they will bring a new energy tomorrow and I can’t wait to see how it all turns out for our finale day.
The craft was a stained glass heart with a cross in the middle, made by gluing little squares of tissue paper onto plastic and then sticking the plastic to the back of the heart which had a cutout inside revealing a cross. It was a nice effect. It’s amazing the things you can find on the internet! The snack was donut glasses using pretzels to hook two donuts together. The game was kickball, but apparently, they play that a lot at school and would rather play basketball and tag and swing on the swing set so we did that instead. Lunch was spaghetti garlic bread, jello, and lemonade.
The message today was about how Jesus helps us believe and the skit was the reenactment of the raising of Lazarus. CJ was wrapped in tissue paper to be Lazarus, Jesse played Jesus and the entire team was involved in either being disciples, or Mary and Martha. Catelyn was our narrator. They pulled off a good message and connected it well to the theme.
After our now usual Karaoke time waiting for parents to pick up kids, we went on an errand run. We stopped at Walmart to get trail mix for the snack tomorrow, we stopped at Sherwin Williams to get paint supplies for the service project at the church, and then we made a quick stop at the Farmington Museum. They had a small traveling exhibit of Dinosaurs there that was interesting and a section about the history of Farmington. The kids put together a large floor puzzle of the United States before hitting the gift shop and then returning home.
After a dinner of roast beef, green beans, pasta salad, and juice we listened to Jesse’s devotion regarding interpersonal relationships. The kids learned that there is a spiritual battle going on. God wants both our vertical and horizontal (interpersonal) relationships to be strong, and Satan is all about tearing those relationships apart. Every action a person does contributes to one of these objectives, so if you are mean to someone, you further Satan’s agenda, but if you help someone or are kind to someone, you further God’s agenda. Spirituality is not a part of our life then, it is our life. Lazarus, come forth! could also be our own rallying call for our spiritual life; to resurrect our spiritual life and get it healthy again so we can participate in the battle going on all around us.
We then debriefed the day and once we were ready for VBS, the kids used their free time to play volleyball and basketball together.
