Guatemala 2018

We are so thankful that our Discovery team in Guatemala is safe following the eruption of Volcán de Fuego. The students have been and continue to be studying Spanish locally. They are thankful to be with their Guatemalan host families and team leaders at this time.

This year, Valor Discovery has and will send out 28 teams of students all over the world to spread the love of Christ. As it says in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” Inspired by these words of Scripture, our students advance the Discovery mission to Go, Serve and Transform.

Valor Discovery is intended to help students and the Valor community see beyond our cultural setting into other cultures around the world. Intercultural experiences can bring about transformation by integrating Christian faith through the journey of exploring other worldviews, belief systems, cultural practices and more.

A well-executed intercultural experience has the potential to significantly advance students’ spiritual, emotional, character and relational development, while meeting the desired educational and ministry goals.

While some Discovery experiences are specifically oriented toward a Christian mission outreach, the primary focus of others may be language learning, cultural immersion, leadership development or academic enhancement. In every case, local or abroad, our students gain the opportunity to develop and model Christ’s servant leadership.

Discovery is one of four distinctive ‘pillars’ of Valor—together with Academics, Arts+Media and Athletics—that seek “to prepare tomorrow’s leaders to transform the world for Christ,” which is the school’s stated vision.
