Kenya Day 2
Today, we had the opportunity to meet the HEART staff members during our morning bible study. They all introduced themselves and shared with us how they have impacted the Kenyan community through God’s word. After this we took a bus into Kibera to the WEEP Center. We were welcomed by the women singing and dancing for us as we entered the facility. We all painted the walls yellow and red, and bonded as a team. The women were so grateful for our hard work to give their center a new look. Some of the women in the WEEP program have their own homes in different areas of the slums. This was when we got to split up into groups of 3 and visit their homes. We got the chance to meet their kids and play with them.

Grace and I met a woman named Elizabeth, she has 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. Her first husband passed away and she had to split from her second husband because he was abusive towards her and would not take responsibility as a father. Elizabeth’s home was tucked back between two shops in the slums where she had one room about the size of one of our bathroom’s. Just enough space for one bed and a table. Elizabeth was so grateful to have us in her home and pray over her and her children. Everyone met up at a resource center after meeting with the women. This was where the women made lunch for us and shared with us the homemade gifts that some students ended up purchasing. It was a very emotional day driving through the slums. We saw how the lives of the people in Kenya are so different from ours. On our way back to the HEART lodge we stopped by the “Starbucks of Kenya” which was called Java House. After ending our day together in a debrief we discussed our plans for vacation bible school tomorrow for the children of the WEEP women. We had an amazing day and we don’t want to go home.
