Laying the Foundation

(Post from yesterday, Day 5, Tuesday, 3/28/17)...

HI guys, Kenzie Waters here!

Today was a roller coaster. My first journal entry started with "Dead today" but my final journal entry started with "today ROCKED!" if that tells you anything. We started out the day as usual with a quiet time and a huge breakfast and we were challenged to think about anything that we might need healing for from God. Then we headed out to the work sites. I was in group 2 with Shultz and Mike and we cranked out concrete like we were machines. Bayli rocked a nice 3-braid hairstyle while we poured sand, rock, concrete, and water with buckets and put it all into a giant concrete mixer. Then we spread out the foundation using wheel barrows and shovels. We had some great effort put in by the guys at our site (Mitch, Ben, Reid, Kiwi), especially Reid because he kept all of us moving. Also, Crissy and Caitlynn provided nutella, peanut butter, bananas and jelly which made for awesome sandwiches at lunch time. We actually were a little bit ahead of schedule so we got to come home and take super long naps (like two and a half hours guys. We passed out and just did not wake up. No beach for us today but the naps were quite refreshing :)) and we woke up to SMOOTHIES made by yours truly, Crissy Wright.

To end the day we played pick up soccer and we mixed up our groups and we got a ton of playing time. JJ, me, Bri, Abbey, Brendan, and Mitch had a great time on the field with the leaders and the Ticos. Then we were rewarded with huge cheese burgers so I was #happy. On the way home, the girls' van along with Noonanator and Mike had a jam sesh (as always) and since we don't have our phones to play music, we make the music ourselves and sing acapella at the top of our lungs.  Sometimes we let Noonan and Mike put in 80s song requests.

Finally Mike and Crissy led an awesome debrief and we are now heading to bed! We're super excited for tomorrow. Bye everyone!

Dear Families, it's Alex,

Today team 1 spent the day shoveling buckets of rock and sand to make concrete for the foundation of the house. There were a few bumps in the process considering yesterday our mixer wouldn't turn on and we didn't receive any supplies until the end of our work day. Today started off the day with laughs and a mess. The first bag of concrete mix was a small disaster, more powder ended up on Brendan than in the mixer. We all were working tirelessly at our different tasks like shoveling rocks and sand into buckets or transporting the extremely heavy buckets to the mixer. After 16 buckets of rocks, 12 buckets of sand, 5.5 buckets of water, and 2 110 lb bags of cement power were mixed we took wheelbarrows over our makeshift ramp so it could be poured into the marked off floor plan of the house. A little after a lunch of PB & J or BP & Nutella half of our team left to go to a small school called Santa Rosa. Caroline and Nicole spoke to the kids in Spanish about who we are as a discovery team and as a soccer team. At the end they surprised the kids with soccer balls for the school. Brendan, JJ, Darian, Brooks, and I stayed behind and continued to work making concrete at the site. At the end of the work day we felt like we accomplished the impossible, we had successfully poured and leveled the foundation of the house with the help of only one Costa Rican worker.
We played pick up soccer at Villa Real field under the lights with the Ticos, Iguana Surf, and ourselves. We spent the evening enjoying the company of local Costa Rican kids and building relationships with soccer players who own a surf shop in Tamarindo. In the second part of the evening, the coaches and I played with the surfers from Iguana Surf. They offered to give us free surf lessons if we had time to hit the waves again while we were here... Overall today was the hardest day so far, but we are ready to get back to work tomorrow so we can finish our houses by the end of the week. All the prayers and love sent our way are greatly appreciated by the team! Headed to bed.
Blessings,
Alex Daws
