Day 2 in PC
Hi everyone!! We had a great second day here in Puerto Cabezas. We woke up around 7:15, ate breakfast, and started working as soon as we could. As many of you know, our main job here in Puerto Cabezas is to make progress on the wall that someday will surround the orphanage. Today, many of us transported concrete blocks and mixed concrete with shovels, while others stacked the concrete and blocks onto the wall. It was so much fun the be working on the wall again (since I’m a returner) and some of the workers even said that they remembered me!! It really humbled me to know that we’re working on the same wall on this trip that I was building here in Puerto Cabezas two years ago, and I realized that this job could be done so much quicker if it wasn’t for the lack of supplies and finances. After work, we ate lunch and went swimming in a river with the orphans!
Everyone is happy and healthy and well-fed and we are all having a really amazing time. It’s been so sweet to see how close the team is becoming as the trip progresses, and I’m so excited for what’s to come!

Wow, what an experience – and it’s only day two! Today was the first full day in Nicaragua, and it was packed. We started off the activity with helping to build the wall. This was probably my favorite part of the day (surprisingly). Some people were laying bricks on the wall, others mixing concrete, and others carrying the concrete in buckets to the wall. I was honestly enjoying carrying the concrete because I got to pause and talk to the people around me and delight in one another’s company. I was mostly working with Dave, a worker named Lenny, and one of the orphans Bryan. Within the time of working, I was able to build relationships with these people, as many others on this team did in their time too. I tend to forget that working should be joyful, because we should rejoice in this day that the Lord has made, and that I can’t forget to know the people around me. This experience reminded me of the beauty of community, and that we can have joy within everything.
After getting cleaned up a little bit and refueled, we crammed into the buses to go to the beach. Actually - PLOT TWIST - we ended up going to the river after a rollercoaster bus ride. Many of us got in with the kids. We also got to snack and talk with the kids who didn’t want to go in the water. The pure delight and joy on the kids’ faces as they play and laugh, in my opinion, is God’s greatest creation.
We returned to the orphanage for some down time, and soon enough, dinner. Afterwards, most of the group went to be with the kids. I had a different experience and went to sing with the worship band for their youth group. I think it’s so beautiful that in this culture, worship is much more of a genuine celebration, whereas I feel that sometimes at home it’s always serious.
Reflecting on the day, I think that my favorite part was simply talking. Yes, for the majority of us there’s a language barrier, but it’s amazing how a smile can come in like a wrecking ball and break down those walls. This team, whether returners or new, has been able to build wonderful relationships with the kids and staff members throughout their experiences. I’m thankful to be here and on this team and can’t wait to see what else God has in store for us! Sending mucho amor!!
