Work Hard, Play Hard

We started Wednesday with a breakfast of oatmeal - Aca style! (It was basically rice that had been cooked into a porridge with pork). Then we were on our way to work, about a 20 minute walk through beautiful jungle with wild banana trees everywhere. Our project was helping finish a house for a local pastor.

We spent the morning hauling bags of cement and bricks down to the work site. The kids worked incredibly hard. It was awesome to see the stronger guys, like Jarred, Josh, Tristan, Liam, Ben, and Alex carrying 80+ pound bags of cement! The others formed an assembly line to carry the bricks - a truly genius idea.

As snacks, the villagers fed us wild mulberries fresh off the bush and coffee they had harvested and roasted just miles away. Whole Foods can't even compare to the level of organic goodness we received!

The afternoon was spent carrying and mixing sand, cement, and rocks to create concrete and then using buckets to pour the floor of the house. It was hard work, especially using the hoes to combine the mixture. Grace was a machine, mixing for hours and proving just how hard girls can work.
In the evening, we returned to the village where we played with the children. Despite the language barrier, our girls were able to teach hand games to the little girls! Then we took bucket showers (a new experience for many), had a debrief, and went to bed.

The next morning, we got up for breakfast which was surprisingly American - scrambled eggs, toast, fruit, and yogurt. Our work day was spent mixing - you guessed it - more concrete! We helped the residents of Abolosang build their outdoor, covered community meeting area, helping them tile the floor of a few rooms, pouring the floor for the patio, finishing the roof, and demolishing an old shed.

We continued playing with the kids, teaching hand games and chants. The little children started mimicking our English and teaching each other how to say things like "Double, double this that!" in sing-songy voices.

Tomorrow is our final day in the village. We're sad to go, but excited for the carnival and feast planned in the evening!
