Let the Building Begin...
Today in Puerto Penasco the construction began on a family's new home. The scope is big, but the slab we build upon is small. Our tasks were detailed and our hands busy, but our hearts were in relationship. Relationship with one another, and relationship with the people we serve is what we keep coming back to, no matter how tired we are at the end of the day.
We began the day on the site, with only piles of lumber, bags of concrete, a mountain of sandy gravel, a concrete slab and a handful of plans. Slowly but surely the plans took shape, as small groups put together each section of wall and roof. It took a team to put everything together, square and sturdy upon the slab. Soon the structure was standing, though, to the delight of those who are rewarded by the clear evidence of hard work.
We were blessed to have the company of Amor staff, and perhaps even more so to spend the day with Omar, Aurora and their three kids. Omar and Aurora received the first house a Valor group ever built, and they have been showing up to job sites, hammers and tortillas in hand ever since. Their faithfulness to us is evidence of the impact Valor is having in Puerto Penasco. What a blessing this family is.
The day was hot, but a consistent breeze made the work bearable. After lunch, the roof went up, the wiring went on, and the early stages of the stucco process began. There's a lot of work to be done still, but this is a group that gets after the tasks without complaint. With the help of our Puerto Penasco friends, some diligent returners, persistent leaders and energetic newcomers, the job is on the run and we're excited to go back tomorrow.
We left the site at 5, made a quick turnaround at home, and then walked five houses east to have dinner with the Gentrys, a Valor family. The family prepared a delicious meal for us - it was a treat to be able to relax with them for an evening.
The night ended with a debrief and devotional, and while the conversation was valuable, the eyes around the room were heavy. Rowdy shuffleboard games aren't happening on the patio tonight, rather everyone has wearily retired after a long, laborious day in the sun.
We're back at it tomorrow morning, ready to hit the ground running the moment we get to the build on the other side of the railroad tracks from us. Hopefully we have the opportunity to spend the day with our Puerto Penasco friends again...their joy and their willingness encourages us. We are also praying for more children to show up - their energy on the site is a welcome release at break time.
All are still healthy and safe, and desiring God to challenge and grow us. Please continue to keep our work, our hearts, and our efforts in your prayers. Transformation is what we're after...we're using nails and hammers to get there.
Until tomorrow, goodnight and blessings from Mexico.
