Last Day
Darby Goodyear and Nicole Macdonald
As the trip comes to an end, we can’t help but be grateful for the opportunities we have had. At the beginning of the trip, we visited the WEEP center. While we were there, we met a young girl named Angeline. She always had the cutest smile on her face and the sweetest laugh. We walked through the Kibera Slum and visited her mother’s house. It was impossibly small. We were expecting a small home, but we were not expecting the dark, closet-sized house we walked into. Six people lived in that home, and it was constructed from dirt and sticks. Despite all the hardships that have taken place, there was still so much love and so much joy because they no longer lived on the streets filled with garbage.
In Kisii, we had the opportunity to build a mud house. With dirt smeared all over our faces and hair and clothes, we were not complaining. Pamela, the widow we built the home for, was so grateful to have people come and serve her in person.
In Kitale, we visited the Children of Hope orphanage. Fifty children live there, and they care for each other so much that they are like one family. We spent four days there, and connected with the children. One day, we even got to do their laundry. One of the girl’s names is Joy, and that describes her perfectly. She lost both of her parents to HIV Aids, and her brother abandoned her while they were living on the streets. One day, he decided he wanted to make a better life for her and brought her to Children of Hope. Both brother and sister were taken in by the orphanage. The selflessness of the mothers working for the orphanage was so beautiful and impacts so many lives. We also visited the Children of Hope home in Kikuyu, outside Nairobi. The kids recited Bible verses, poems, and songs. Even the young kids knew some English and were able to recite verses. At such a young age, they have so much love for Jesus.
We are incredibly thankful for this opportunity to come and humbly serve others in the name of Jesus. Seeing the fire and love for the Lord in this country is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Here, Jesus’ love is shown without hesitation. We are inspired to love Jesus and his people the same way.
