Working with ADERA
Yesterday was our first day partnering with ADERA. One of the ways they have partnered with the community is by providing a hot lunch for around two hundred students at Hiber Elementary School. This school is in close proximity to the Koshe landfill. Providing this meal allows the kids to stay at school through lunch and complete the full day of classes rather than going to the dump to look for food after which they often don’t return to school.
As ADERA partners with the community, we are here to partner with ADERA. They asked us to come with a few lessons that would teach the kids important principles and truths. Part of our preparation for this trip was forming four teams and constructing those lessons. The topics we addressed were: community, goal setting, truth telling, and loving your neighbor. Each of our groups teaches a session before and after lunch of roughly 40 kids. We played games in the classrooms and prepared crafts for the kids as well.
The students have made observations about the atmosphere here at Hiber compared to the atmosphere that was established at Elshadai. Each place presents a unique form of need and tones of desperation. It has been encouraging to hear students share new experiences they encountered today and know that even though we are on the tail end of the trip, they are still learning new things about themselves each day. While we miss the clinic atmosphere, some of the students were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable they felt in the front of a class.
